SySTEM 2020 focuses on science learning outside the classroom, mapping the field across Europe, evaluating a number of transdisciplinary programmes to design best principles for educators in this field, and also examining individual learning ecologies by piloting self-evaluation tools for learners which will document science learning outside of the classroom. This study maps practices in 19 EU countries, including in-depth studies in 8 of these countries, covering learners between 9 - 20 years from various backgrounds including those from geographically remote, socio-economically disadvantaged, minority and/or migrant communities. Current practice in corporate training analytics has been based on monitoring the behaviour of learners across various learning platforms. This type of monitoring has been challenging for a number of reasons (diversity of learning platforms, statistics that don’t translate into actionable metrics).
Thus, there is a need for technology which will consider type of competencies such as critical thinking and deliver a mappings to actionable analytics.

We visualized and analyzed the icons of 158,200 educational apps that were uploaded to Apple’s App Store from July 2008 to November 2014, using a big-data visualization method called Cultural Analytics. We demonstrate how analyzing the software icons of an application domain (in our case, education) can help researchers gain insights into the domain.

This short project focused on designing a study planner for high-school students. The design ranged from building a visual language for the avatars and the courses, a dashboard and a newsletter for the students, and the onboarding UX for the study planner. The planner was backed by a strengths-based pedagogy which underlies the design.

This research will focus on developing standards for highly usable APIs that will be applied through example packaging for existing content reuse components. The packaging of non-service-based IP such as UI/UX innovation, visualisation, and instructional design, will also be considered.
